Ingredients

Scale

For the Rice:

  • 1 ½ cups long-grain white or jasmine rice
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme

For the Topping (Optional but Highly Recommended!):

  • ½ cup Gruyère, Swiss, or Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 2 tbsp crispy fried onions (for garnish)
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

1️⃣ Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized.
  3. Stir in garlic and Worcestershire sauce, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

2️⃣ Toast the Rice

  1. Add the uncooked rice to the skillet with the onions.
  2. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the rice is lightly toasted and coated in the buttery onion mixture.

3️⃣ Cook the Rice to Perfection

  1. Pour in the beef broth, add thyme, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  3. Cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes, until the rice absorbs the liquid and becomes tender.
  4. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.

4️⃣ Add the Cheesy Topping & Serve

  1. Fluff the rice with a fork to release steam.
  2. Stir in shredded Gruyère or Parmesan cheese for a creamy, rich finish.
  3. Top with crispy fried onions and fresh parsley for extra crunch and brightness.
  4. Serve warm with your favorite protein or as a standalone dish!

Notes

🔥 Pro Tip: For an extra boost of flavor, replace half the broth with a splash of French onion soup!

🔥 Pro Tip: For an oven-baked version, transfer to a baking dish, top with cheese, and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown!
