Beef Tagine – Moroccan Slow-Cooked Perfection🍖

This Beef Tagine is a rich, slow-cooked Moroccan dish featuring tender beef, warm spices, and a hint of sweetness. Traditionally made in a clay tagine pot, this dish can also be prepared in a Dutch oven or slow cooker for a deeply flavorful, comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Tagine:

  • 2 lbs beef chuck or shank, cut into chunks
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • ½ cup dried apricots or prunes, chopped
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 (15 oz) can chickpeas, drained (optional)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste

For the Spice Blend:

  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 pinch saffron threads (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

1️⃣ Marinate the Beef for Maximum Flavor

  1. In a bowl, mix all the spices together.
  2. Rub the spice mixture all over the beef chunks.
  3. Let marinate for at least 1 hour (overnight for deeper flavor).

🔥 Pro Tip: Saffron adds an extra layer of depth—bloom it in warm water before using!

2️⃣ Sear the Beef for a Deep, Rich Flavor

  1. Heat olive oil in a tagine or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat.
  2. Sear the beef chunks on all sides until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  3. Remove the beef and set aside.

🔥 Pro Tip: Searing locks in juices and enhances flavor!

3️⃣ Sauté the Aromatics & Build the Base

  1. In the same pot, sauté onions until soft and golden (5 minutes).
  2. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Stir in tomato paste and diced tomatoes, cooking for another 2 minutes.

🔥 Pro Tip: Caramelizing the onions enhances the sauce’s sweetness!

4️⃣ Slow-Cook for Maximum Tenderness

  1. Return the beef to the pot and pour in beef broth.
  2. Add dried apricots (or prunes), chickpeas, and honey.
  3. Cover and let simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours, until beef is tender and sauce thickens.

🔥 Pro Tip: For an authentic touch, cook in a clay tagine over low heat!

5️⃣ Garnish & Serve

  1. Garnish with fresh parsley, almonds, and extra dried fruit.
  2. Serve hot with couscous, rice, or warm pita bread.

🔥 Pro Tip: A squeeze of lemon or preserved lemon adds a tangy contrast!
